MIAMI-DADE SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO M. CARVALHO ANNOUNCES DISTRICT-WIDE SUPPORT FOR ‘LET’S MOVE! ACTIVE SCHOOLS’ INITIATIVE M-DCPS is the first school district in the nation to participate in the initiative Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho has offered district-wide support to the Let’s Move! Active Schools initiative that was launched earlier this month by First Lady Michelle Obama. M-DCPS is the fourth largest school district in the United States and the first to participate in the initiative. "Let’s Move! Active Schools will benefit our students by creating active school environments that help kids become healthier and perform better academically,” said Carvalho. “We must invest in our students if we expect to compete globally in the 21st Century, and providing them opportunities to be physically active before, during, and after school is a great step in the right direction." Let’s Move! Active Schools, is a new collaboration with the private sector to increase physical education in public schools across the country. The initiative addresses these challenges by spurring innovative solutions and offering customized tools every step of the way to empower schools to create low-cost or free active environments where students get 60 minutes of physical activity before, during and after the school day. Prominent organizations and corporations have united to boost physical activity in our nation’s schools including the U.S. Department of Education; the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition; the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD); the Alliance for a Healthier Generation; NIKE, Inc; ChildObesity180; General Mills; The GENYOUth Foundation; Let’s Move!; the National PTA; Kaiser Permanente; and the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA).
