MIAMI-DADE SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO M. CARVALHO INTRODUCES FIRST LADY MICHELLE OBAMA ON ‘LET’S MOVE! ACTIVE SCHOOLS’ CONFERENCE CALL

M-DCPS is the first school district in the nation to participate in the initiative

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho introduced First Lady Michelle Obama during a March 19 conference call to expand the reach of the Let’s Move! Active Schools initiative that was launched earlier this month by Mrs. Obama.  M-DCPS is the fourth largest school district in the U.S. and the first to participate in the initiative.

The First Lady thanked the Superintendent for the school district’s efforts at helping kids become healthier and perform better academically.  “I have spent time in your schools, and I am profoundly impressed,” said Mrs. Obama.

Superintendent Carvalho shared expertise and advice with educators nationwide about how to increase opportunities for students to be more active, and in turn, better learners. The First Lady encouraged other school leaders to also share their best practices.

Let’s Move! Active Schools, is a new collaboration with the private sector to increase physical education in public schools across the country.  The initiative addresses these challenges by spurring innovative solutions and offering customized tools every step of the way to empower schools to create low-cost or free active environments where students get 60 minutes of physical activity before, during and after the school day.

Prominent organizations and corporations have united to boost physical activity in our nation’s schools including the U.S. Department of Education; the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition; the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation & Dance (AAHPERD); the Alliance for a Healthier Generation; NIKE, Inc; ChildObesity180; General Mills; The GENYOUth Foundation; Let’s Move!; the National PTA; Kaiser Permanente; and the Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA).
