TEAMS FROM TWO SCHOOLS FOR ADVANCED STUDIES WIN Two student teams from the School for Advanced Studies won top prizes at the Brain Jeopardy! that was held at the 4th annual Miami Brain Fair. The first and second place winners were teams from the School for Advanced Studies (SAS) in Kendall and SAS in Homestead. Founded and chaired by Dr. Coleen Atkins of the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, the fair held the Brain Jeopardy! a team competition similar to the TV game show, “Jeopardy!” This is the first year that included the high school team competition among the many other educational activities about the nervous system. Students were tasked with responding to an array of questions varying in degree of difficulty pertaining to the nervous system. Brain Jeopardy’s first-place winners were the Brain Troopers from the School for Advanced Studies in Kendall comprised of Jenny Poon, Hanna Leyton, Olivia Sanchez, and Silvia Marmol. Second place went to the Sharks from the School for Advanced Studies in Homestead, which included Robert Saylor, Camilo Guevara, Mohamed Yousif, and Daniel Quintero. It was supported by the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Florida International University, Barry University, St. Thomas University, Miami-Dade College, Nova Southeastern University, various other organizations, the Miami Science Museum, and the South Florida chapter of the Society for Neuroscience (the premier society of neuroscientists world-wide) as part of the annual Brain Awareness Week.
