M-DCPS MAGNET SCHOOL RECEIVES TOP MAGNET AWARD

Herbert A. Ammons Middle School was recently awarded the Dr. Donald Waldrip Secondary Magnet School of Excellence Award as the exemplary secondary magnet school in the country. Waldrip is the founder of Magnet Schools of America and was its first executive director.

Herbert A. Ammons Middle School was the first officially authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) in Miami-Dade County. Ammons offers this rigorous program of study to all of its more than 1,100 students in grades 6 – 8. Miami-Dade County Public Schools is proud of the Ammons’ faculty, staff, and students of this stellar educational environment.

MSA is a national organization representing more than 4,000 magnet schools and programs.  Every year the organization recognizes magnet schools for their commitment to high academic standards, curriculum innovation, successful desegregation/diversity efforts, specialized teaching staffs, and parent community involvement. Earlier this year, 18 Miami-Dade County public schools out of 94 schools from across the nation received the coveted Magnet Schools of Excellence Merit Awards.  Seventeen magnet schools out of 121 received the Magnet Schools of Distinction Merit Awards.

No other school district has ever received this number of awards within a single school year. For the second year in a row, M-DCPS out-performed all other school districts nation-wide by a large margin.
