M-DCPS WIN TOP HONORS AT NATIONAL SCIENCE FAIR

Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) students reigned victorious at the recent SECME’s National Student Competition in Atlanta, GA.

M-DCPS has the distinction of sweeping the essay competition with first place honors in each division. Top honors went to 5th- grade student Jhayla Kirkland of Carol City Elementary School, 7th- grade student Kasey Riera of Lamar Louise Curry Middle School and 11th- grade student Stephanie Pardinas Liuzzi of G. Holmes Braddock Senior High School.

Maya Angelou Elementary School tied for first place in the Mousetrap Car Engineering Design competition in the elementary division with other schools across the nation. Two M-DCPS teams placed in the Water Bottle Rocketry Engineering Design competition. Ben Sheppard Elementary School won second place in the elementary division, while Hialeah Gardens Senior High School won third place in the high school division.

Founded in 1975, SECME is a non-profit alliance of 50 school districts, more than 40 engineering universities as well as agencies and industries in 15 states, the District of Columbia and the Bahamas. SECME promotes science, technology, engineering and mathematics among underserved and underrepresented students in order to establish a diverse and globally competitive workforce.
