SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO CARVALHO OFFERS SUPPORT TO MOORE PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT

Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho is reaching out to school district officials in Moore Public Schools in the wake of the recent tornadoes that devastated several areas in Oklahoma.   Superintendent Carvalho will offer disaster recovery and crisis counseling services to help affected students and families.

"We are blessed with talented staff who can help those who are so deeply in need following this terrible tragedy," said School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman. Superintendent Carvalho added, "It is our moral obligation to share our experience and know-how with our neighbors who are experiencing the most tragic times of their lives."

Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) District Crisis Management Team, comprised of highly-trained school psychologists, counselors and social workers will be made available to help students and staff work through the difficult times ahead.

M-DCPS has the capacity to deploy a team of counseling professionals who can provide on-site support and training in dealing with trauma in schools immediately following a disaster, as well as assistance in the creation of ongoing support groups.

Violent school incidents or national tragedies often receive excessive media coverage that causes children confusion and emotional upset.  Parents and school personnel are often called upon to help children cope with the aftermath of these tragedies. The District Crisis Management Team works with school administrators and Critical Incident Response Teams to provide student intervention services following tragedies.

Veteran M-DCPS facilities and operations personnel are experienced in disaster recovery efforts, including Hurricane Andrew, and are willing and able to assist those who are now in need.
