MIAMI-DADE SCHOOL BOARD APPROVES SUPERINTENDENT’S REORGANIZATION PLAN
New Schools Police Chief Approved; Schools Will Receive More Police Officers

The Miami-Dade School Board today approved a non-school site reorganization plan by Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho that will save the school district $10 million.

The values-driven plan will align the district’s investment to specific purposes.  Central office administrators, particularly in facilities construction, will be reduced and contracted program management support services will be utilized to maximize capital construction dollars to modernize and construct schools and upgrade technology.  Audit examinations will be expanded to provide objective transparency and ensure taxpayer protection of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond passed in November 2012.

The reorganization also consolidates some educational divisions to encourage cooperation and interactivity. Math, Science and Career/Technical Education will be united to maximize efficiency.  Additionally, more than 100 central office individuals will be dispatched to schools to assist over-burdened special education teachers with cumbersome paperwork.

Information Technology was realigned to ensure that the District is prepared for the digital convergence and implementation of 21st century technology by eliminating some administrative positions and retooling current resources.

The reorganization also brought the appointment of a new Miami-Dade Schools Police Chief.  Ian A. Moffett, a veteran of both Miami-Dade Schools Police and most recently the City of Miami Police, will assume command of the school district’s police force.  Moffett will have latitude to hire up to 25 police officers to maximize student safety at school sites.
