STATE’S NEW NO-TEXTING-WHILE-DRIVING LAW SIGNED BY GOV. SCOTT
AT ALONZO AND TRACY MOURNING HIGH SCHOOL

The students at Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Senior High School got to witness an actual State law that bans the use of wireless communications devices while driving, being signed into law by Gov. Rick Scott this morning.

School Board Chair Perla Tabares Hantman has been a champion of student safety for many years and was in attendance today. Many of the events she has proposed, such as the “No Texting While Driving” pledge sponsored by AT&T through www.itcanwait.com, have played a pivotal role in drawing attention this important topic.  The texting ban legislation has been in the School Board’s legislative platform for several years.

“I am so appreciative that Governor Scott has signed the law banning texting while driving in our state,” said Ms. Hantman. "With the increased use of wireless devices, texting while driving has become a real concern. We will continue to promote safe, driving initiatives to all the students of Miami-Dade County.”

In addition to the students and faculty from Mourning High who pledged to not text while driving, the governor was joined by representatives from AT&T, Verizon Communications, the Florida Department of Transportation, Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and Miami Children’s Hospital.
