M-DCPS’ INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT HONORED BY TWO ORGANIZATIONS

The Miami-Dade school system’s Learn Ideas, Navigate Knowledge (LINK) program has been presented with the 21st Century Achievement Award by Computerworld magazine at its 25th annual gala in Washington, D.C.

LINK was honored in the Philanthropy Award category, which recognizes organizations that have made significant contributions to a needy cause, such as schools, libraries, community centers, and deserving non-profit organizations.

Some 269 winners, representing 29 countries, were chosen from more than 700 nominations for achievements in 11 award categories.

LINK provides digital literacy training, low-cost computers to more than 7,400 students and Internet service to more than 3,000 households.  Participating families who complete the training receive a software-loaded computer at a cost of $25 to take home and keep. LINK was funded through the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Broadband Technology Opportunities Program as part of the federal economic stimulus package and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Computerworld’s Honors Program recognizes those organizations that create and use information technology to promote and advance the public welfare, benefit society and change the world for the better.

Additionally , the District’s Chief Information Officer, Debbie Karcher, was presented with the Distinguished Service Award by the Council of Great City Schools for her service, professionalism and support of public education on behalf of the county’s urban school children.
