New and returning students will have the opportunity to experience a variety of new educational programs and benefits during the 2013-2014 school year. To assist parents in preparing for the first day of school, the District has posted the Back-to-School Tool Kit online at www.dadeschools.net. The tool kit has pertinent information on subjects ranging from choice schools, dual enrollment, graduation requirements, parent involvement and school safety. Students can benefit from information found in the tool kit, and parents may also use it to find out about important dates and policies regarding their child’s education. Miami-Dade Schools Police is adding additional support to provide expanded school security this year. Nine new officers were sworn in on August 16, bringing the total of new police officer positions deployed at schools to 18. An additional 18 police officers are scheduled to be hired over the course of the school year, progressing to a goal of 36 new deployed positions. M-DCPS will open five school libraries to serve the public in the wake of expected county library closings due to budget cuts. The five media centers are housed within educational technical centers that currently have expanded hours. New this school year, the M-DCPS Department of Food and Nutrition is providing an expanded after-school snack service, the Snack Plus program, at selected economically needy schools.
