TWO MIAMI-DADE PUBLIC SCHOOL EDUCATORS VIE FOR NATIONAL MUSIC HONOR

Two Miami-Dade public school music teachers were recently recognized as semi-finalists for the first-ever Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and the Grammy Foundation.

More than 30,000 educators from across the nation vied for this prestigious honor. The field was narrowed to 25 semi-finalists. Leslie Denning of South Miami Middle School and Vivian Gonzalez of South Miami K-8 Center have the distinction of not only representing Miami-Dade County Public Schools, they are also the only semi-finalists from Florida.

The Music Educator Award was created to honor educators who have made meaningful and lasting contributions in music education. In addition, these teachers display a dedication to preserving and promoting music education at their respective schools. These educators teach kindergarten through college in public and private school settings.

The field will be whittled down to 10 finalists.  The winner will be awarded $10,000. The finalists will receive $1,000. The finalists’ schools will receive matching grants. The winner will be announced in December.
