M-DCPS SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO M. CARVALHO NAMED AN HONOREE Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Superintendent Alberto Carvalho will receive a 2013 Arts Education Award along with blues musician B.B. King, actress Dakota Fanning, philanthropist Mary Pappajohn and sculptor Joel Shapiro from Americans for the Arts on Monday, Oct. 21 in New York. The awards will be presented as part of a benefit at the famed Cipriani 42nd Street during National Arts and Humanities Month, the largest celebration of its kind in the nation. Carvalho, who became Superintendent of the nation’s fourth largest school system in 2008, is a nationally recognized expert on school reform and finance. He successfully transformed M-DCPS’ business operations and financial system by implementing a streamlined strategic framework and aligning resources to classroom priorities, which have resulted in dramatic increases in reserves, bond ratings and student achievement.
