STATEMENT BY MIAMI-DADE SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS ALBERTO M. CARVALHO REGARDING GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT’S EXECUTIVE ORDER ABOUT PARCC (PARTNERSHIP FOR ASSESSMENT OF READINESS FOR COLLEGE AND CAREERS)
MIAMI – “High standards and respectful accountability must continue to position our children well in light of the new emerging economy,” said Miami-Dade Superintendent of Schools Alberto M. Carvalho, regarding Governor Rick Scott’s Executive Order about the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC).
“We must proceed cautiously in the adoption of assessments that measure these standards, to ensure that we are fiscally responsible, taking into consideration funds already expended and the costs of moving forward with new assessments. With these dramatic upcoming changes that affect school accountability and teacher evaluation, it is critical that a transitional period be established that provides reasonable time to ensure that the systems being designed are valid, reliable and informative. We must also be sure that students with disabilities and English language learners are fairly and reasonably included in any accountability system; this has been on my agenda since the first taskforces were convened.”
