M-DCPS SUPERINTENDENT ALBERTO M. CARVALHO
RECEIVED 2013 NATIONAL ARTS AWARD

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho was honored with the 2013 Arts Education Award by Americans for the Arts on Monday in New York.
Other honorees included blues musician B.B. King, actress Dakota Fanning, philanthropist Mary Pappajohn and sculptor Joel Shapiro.

Carvalho received this honor for his continued efforts in support of arts education.  During the toughest economic times our nation has experienced in this generation, Carvalho never once terminated any teacher or eliminated arts programs due to lack of funding.  He is a passionate arts supporter and as Superintendent launched the Cultural Passport Program, an educational initiative that provides all students, grades K-12, with a different cultural field experience each school year. In the course of their education, all students get the opportunity to visit museums and art galleries, and experience live musical, theatrical, and dance performances.

American for the Arts was founded in 1960 and is the nation’s leading nonprofit organization for advancing the arts and arts education. The annual awards recognize artists and arts leaders who exhibit exemplary national leadership and whose work demonstrates extraordinary artistic achievement.
