ACADEMY OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY AT Miami Central Senior High School’s Academy of Information Technology received national recognition as a model program by the National Career Academy Coalition at its recent national conference held in Phoenix. This coveted distinction was earned by undergoing an assessment process that included intense preparation and a site-team review. These industry-themed career academies support skills development and career awareness related to one or more of the One Community One Goal targeted industries. Students enrolled in career academy programs earn industry level certifications that give them an edge in the career and college application process; participate in summer internships; network with business and community leaders; involve themselves in community service projects; and are eligible for dual enrollment courses and college scholarships. A nationally recognized career academy follows the 10 National Standards of Practice introduced by a consortium of career academy organizations and endorsed by the U.S. Departments of Education and Labor. Miami-Dade County Public Schools has the largest number of nationally recognized academies of any school district. They are recognized by either the National Career Academy Coalition or the National Academy Foundation, which focuses on college and career readiness. The Miami Central Academy of Information Technology is a magnet career academy affiliated with the National Academy Foundation under the auspices of the Department of Career and Technical Education.
