MIAMI-DADE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS TO RE-OPEN ON MONDAY, JAN. 7

All Miami-Dade County public schools and administrative offices will reopen on Monday, January 7, at their regularly scheduled times.

2012 was a year of great achievements for Miami-Dade County Public Schools, including the win of the prestigious Broad Prize, the nation’s highest award for public school districts, as well as being named recipient of a $30 million Race to the Top grant that will provide enhanced mathematics opportunities.  Students are outperforming their peers on national standardized tests, and graduation rates have increased by double digits.

"Students will return to classes Monday in schools that offer a sense of calm and security," said Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho. "Our community's residents share a collective responsibility for the upbringing, education and safety of our children, and they are proud of the achievements of our school district. In the weeks ahead we will convene a meeting of local partners, including police departments and social services agencies, to develop a best in the nation safety envelope around our schools."

Safety and security are maximum priorities for the school district.  It has long been known that students who do not feel safe cannot learn, so every effort has been made to provide a safe learning environment for every student.  Miami-Dade is one of the few school districts in Florida to have its own police force, and police personnel will be utilized strategically to allow for best coverage. The school district will be working closely with municipal police departments and local mayors to provide an envelope of security for students, staff and schools.

Each Miami-Dade student’s home will receive an automated message informing parents of the district’s security efforts.  Students will be greeted with messages on Monday morning that encourage an atmosphere of respect, responsibility and restraint.
