G.W. CARVER MIDDLE SCHOOL NAMED A FINALIST IN THE
SAMSUNG SOLVE FOR TOMORROW CONTEST

Vote for Carver Middle online through March 13

G.W. Carver Middle School has been chosen as one of 15 national finalists in the 2014 Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest.  As a finalist, Carver Middle will receive a technology package valued at $35,000.

The Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest was created in 2010 to raise awareness and interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).  Participants are challenged to apply their classroom learning to solve issues in their communities.  This year, there were more than 2,300 applicants for the program.

Finalists were tasked with creating videos to showcase their solutions to the challenges.  Carver Middle’s video submission titled, Old Smokey’s Dirty Secret, details how students aspire to gather scientific evidence to bring attention to a community environmental challenge, the city’s former garbage incinerator, in order to compel public action.

Five national winners will be chosen from the finalists.  A judging panel will select four of the winners.  The fifth national winner – the People’s Choice Award winner - will be selected by public online voting.  Carver Middle’s video is posted online at http://www.samsung.com/us/solvefortomorrow/projects/old-smokeys-dirty-secret.html.  Voting is open now through March 13, 2014 and you may vote once per day.

The five national winners will each receive a $140,000 technology grant and will be honored at an awards assembly in Washington, D.C. in April.  Since 2004, Samsung’s education programs have provided more than $13 million in technology to more than 500 public schools in the U.S.
