TWO M-DCPS PARTNERS HONORED WITH PRESTIGIOUS
BUSINESS RECOGNITION AWARD

Two Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ (M-DCPS) partners - Florida Power & Light (FPL) and Odebrecht USA - were honored last month at the 28th Annual Commissioner’s Business Recognition Awards in Tampa. The awards honor inventive public-private partnerships that encourage educational success in Florida private schools.

FPL’s support of the school district’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiatives has benefited many schools and students.  In the past two years, FPL has increased its support footprint to include teacher grants, school robotics equipment, and photovoltaic panel installations on school campuses.  FPL has also committed manpower to support the Miami-Dade County STEM EXPO by judging science fairs and SECME competitions.  Its support has helped make the STEM Expo the biggest and best in Florida.

Odebrecht USA has been a M-DCPS partner for many years. The company forged its best projects as a partner to Orchard Villa Elementary, building strong relationships with many of the students and their families.  At the opening of the school every year, they provide book bags to students living in shelters and computers to families of potentially gifted students who don’t have functioning computers at home.  Odebrecht gives career presentations to the students while providing hands-on experience in building and construction.  This exposure to careers and goal-setting has spilled over to the students’ parents, inspiring them to seek employment.
