The essay contest is based on a national college level contest that encourages students to apply Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel’s call to action to “think higher, and feel deeper” about ethical issues facing our society. Scholarship winners were announced last Wednesday, May 20, and they were: Two runners-ups, each received a $250 scholarship: Five finalists each received a $50 award: Mr. Wiesel himself selected the 10 finalists and sent them a personal message in a video presented at the award ceremony hosted by The Betsy-South Beach. The ceremony included remarks from Superintendent of Schools Alberto Carvalho, Youth Fair President and CEO Robert Hohenstein, LRN representative Jean-Marc Levy of New York City, and Jonathan Plutzik, owner of The Betsy-South Beach and Dr. Lawrence S. Feldman, Vice Chair of the School Board. # # # 15-DGD/282/TC
