February 8, 1999

Miami-Dade County Public Schools Title I Program, in collaboration with Raintree/Steck-Vaughn Publishers, will honor student writers at the annual Young Authors' Awards, 11 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 18, Radisson Mart Plaza Hotel, 711 N.W. 72 Avenue, Miami. Students' original manuscripts will be on display in the "Title I Writers' Gallery."

Eligible students in grades 2-5 in schools implementing Title I Programs were encouraged to participate in the national contest, "Publish-A-Book," sponsored by Raintree/Steck-Vaughn. Students wrote stories on the theme, "Fairy Tales, Folk Tales & Tall Tales." Each entry was submitted by a teacher/sponsor. Parents supported their children's writing by listening, helping to generate ideas, and inspiring confidence.

Participating schools submitted the winning entries to the Title I Region office for recognition at a region competition. All region winners' manuscripts were forwarded to Raintree/Steck-Vaughn Publishers in Austin, Texas, for the national contest. National winners will be selected by May 1, 1999.
