Miami-Dade County Public Schools will break ground on the construction of a new almost 12,000 sq. ft., classroom addition at Ben Sheppard Elementary School. Architect Laura M. Perez & Associates, Inc. and J.R.T. Construction Company are commissioned to deliver the $6.4 million three-year project. The project has a S/MBE Utilization of 20 percent with highly diverse sub-consultant team for construction.
The school is named for the beloved Dr. Ben Sheppard, a man of many talents who left an indelible mark on the South Florida community. “Dr. Ben,” was a pediatrician, a Dade County medical examiner, a juvenile judge and a humanitarian who worked extensively in drug rehabilitation and with charities. He was best known to the school system as a member and chairman of the then-Dade County School Board, which he served devotedly from 1968 until his death in 1980 at the age of 77.
The scope of work includes: a new 11,965 sq.ft. classroom addition, which will provide 286 student stations; renovation of 10 existing buildings, including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC); lighting and security system improvements; demolition of existing portables and site restoration; new parent drop-off and covered walkways; parking lot upgrades; a new playground and exterior painting, among other improvements.
The school bond projects resulted from voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond. The bond is being used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the District, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools.
