A 28-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Schools Police Department, Chief Ivan E. Silva began his career as a School Resource Officer. In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant where he was assigned to central operations. He later became the department’s Public Information Officer where he handled community affairs. In 2013, Silva was promoted to Commander and subsequently was assigned to the Administrative Division.
He was promoted to the rank of Major in 2019 and was assigned to the Strategic Planning Division. There he oversaw management of the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation Process and ensured the Department’s compliance with the “Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act.” Silva earned a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice from Florida International University and is a graduate of the Southern Police Institute Command Officer’s Development Course.
