Aquatic-Themed Mural Unveiled at South Pointe Elementary Focuses on Conserving Marine Ecosystem

Representatives from Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), the City of Miami Beach and the Miami Beach South Pointe Elementary PTA as well as students gathered at the school this morning to unveil a stunning, augmented reality mural portraying Florida’s vibrant coral reef and marine life.

The mural, which features two children observing a large sea turtle and the surrounding coral and sea life, was created to raise awareness for the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go together with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.

Students from South Pointe Elementary, Miami Beach Senior High and Miami Lakes Educational Center participated in the entire process of design, video creation, 3-D art and Augmented Reality programming to create this mural.

The South Pointe mural touches on the importance of protecting our beaches and conserving our oceans and marine ecosystem. The Florida Reef, also known as the Florida Keys Reef Tract, is the only living coral barrier reef in the continental U.S. and the third largest in the world.

The complete list of SDGs is available at https://sdgs.un.org/goals.
