Construction will begin shortly on renovations at Everglades K-8 Center after the Miami-Dade School Board awarded the construction contract to J.R.T. Construction Co. to complete the General Obligation Bond (GOB) project, valued at $6.5 million.
Located in the Tamiami area, Everglades K-8 Center was built in 1957. The school had additions constructed afterwards and currently includes 17 permanent buildings with a capacity of 1,087 student stations. The scope of work includes campus-wide painting, and replacement of the fire alarm system, HVAC system and doors and windows. The basketball courts will be upgraded to include new goals, backboard, recoating and restriping. Additionally, miscellaneous electrical upgrades will be done, as well as the addition of new emergency lights.
The project is scheduled to be completed by January 2023.
J.R.T. will use a total Sub-Consultant Small/Micro Business Enterprise (S/MBE) participation of 16.98 percent and Minority/Women Business Enterprises (M/WBE) participation of 8.98 percent.
All design and construction shall be in compliance with State Requirements for Educational Facilities, the Florida Building Code, National Fire Protection Association, Florida Fire Prevention Code (Life Safety Code), barrier-free design guidelines, Florida Statutes and Miami-Dade County Public Schools Design Standards and District policies.
In 2012, voters overwhelmingly approved the GOB to renovate, remodel and replace schools; expand student capacity; enhance safety and provide technology upgrades. To see the current projects, visit Capital Improvements at @MDCPSCapital on Twitter or use #GOBProgress.
