Dr. Jose L.
Dotres officially took the helm of the nation’s fourth largest school system as
the superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) on Valentine’s
Day.
Dr. Dotres
spent his first day visiting the schools where he previously worked. He
reunited with former coworkers at Hialeah Gardens Elementary, where he served
as principal, and M.A. Milam K-8 Center in Hialeah, where he was an assistant
principal. He continued school visits
during his second day on the job, thanking teachers, custodians, food service personnel
and school leaders at Miami Beach South Pointe Elementary, where he taught 2nd-grade
ESOL and at Frederick Douglass Elementary School, where he began his teaching
career at M-DCPS in 1988.
“I am honored
to have been selected by our School Board to come back and serve as
Superintendent. I am grateful for the dedicated and talented teachers, school
leaders and staff members who work collectively to ensure that our students are
successful,” said Superintendent Dotres.
Dr. Dotres met
with counselors during his school visits as addressing student mental health
issues is among his top priorities. He will also address learning loss and the
need to accelerate learning for students. Dr. Dotres is committed to providing
the appropriate instructional strategies and supports so students can grow
academically.
