M-DCPS, Miami-Dade County Address Affordable Workforce Housing

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jose L. Dotres joined Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava for the Mayor’s Building Blocks Housing Summit. Hundreds of participants concerned about the housing affordability crisis affecting county residents attended the event hosted by Mayor Levine Cava and the Department of Public Housing and Community Development. Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), under the visionary leadership of the School Board, has been a strong proponent of affordable workforce housing; a critical issue affecting the District’s workforce. The Board has approved a number of innovative partnerships to address this including:

Southside Preparatory Academy, located in District 3 is a cutting-edge public-private partnership project for the expansion of Southside Preparatory Academy and 10 workforce housing units with priority to M-DCPS employees in the Brickell area.

Phillis Wheatley Elementary School, located in District 2 will include a new school and 150 affordable housing units which extends the work with Southside Preparatory Academy and is part of the School Board approved partnership with the County and The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

J.R.E. Lee Educational Center, located in District 6, will include a renovated/new education facility, space for community services, and housing with priority for the M-DCPS workforce.

“I am encouraged by Mayor Levine Cava’s effort to this important issue, and the District, under the Board’s leadership is eager to engage in innovative partnerships to solve this problem,” said Superintendent Dotres. “This work has been a priority of this Board, in particular, those Board members who represent the communities in which these projects reside, Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, Ms. Mari Tere Rojas and Ms. Lucia Baez-Geller. Working collaboratively, we can find ways to achieve mutual goals and solve critical community needs. It is imperative that we identify sustainable solutions to the betterment of the entire community.”
