Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce Launch 'Reading Chamber' Initiative to Foster a Love of Reading in First-Grade Students

Schools Superintendent Dr. Jose L. Dotres joined Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce President G. Eric Knowles at Lakeview Elementary Wednesday to kick off "The Reading Chamber" Initiative.

This initiative expands the Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce Members’ community of care by having them become volunteer readers to first-grade students throughout Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS). The Reading Chamber’s goal is to build a strong foundation for future learning by fostering a love for reading through interactive and engaging volunteer activities.

Both leaders were welcomed by Lakeview Elementary Principal Dr. Marie Bleus, and they visited Ms. Roberts and Ms. Connelly’s first grade classes where they read “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” to students.

March 2, 2024, is designated as National Read Across America Day. Since that date is on a weekend, M-DCPS will celebrate the event on Friday, March 1, 2024. Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce members, comprised of local business owners and community leaders, will participate by volunteering to read at five schools throughout the district: Barbara Hawkins Elementary School, Fulford Elementary School, Arcola Lakes Elementary School, Van E. Blanton Elementary School and Parkway Elementary School. The Reading Chamber is an ongoing initiative bringing the local business community and schools together to support education.
