Miami-Dade County Public Schools Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony at Miami Arts Studio 6-12 @ Zelda Glazer

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday at Miami Arts Studio 6-12 @ Zelda Glazer to celebrate an $8 million remodeling and renovation project that will include the addition of a new building, P.E. Shelter, and covered walkways.

“All of these different groups of students in this school represent the arts that are so important in the lives of our students and community,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jose L. Dotres. “And today, this groundbreaking, with a dance studio and an art studio, addresses everything that pertains to the arts. We owe it to the students, to the parents, to the community, because so many wonderful things come out from this school, the talent, the music.”

In addition to Dr. Dotres, M-DCPS Chief Facilities and Design Construction Officer Raul F. Perez, School Board member Monica Colucci, Miami Arts Studio @ Zelda Glazer Principal Dr. Balsera, school staff, and students gathered at the school for the event.

Veitia Padron, Inc. was awarded the project, which includes a new 14,000 sq. ft. building, with classrooms for dance, band, and music, including several auxiliary rooms for storage and practice.

“I think it’s a privilege being able to play with students who have incredible talents and being surrounded by such expensive equipment that we’re so privileged to have,” said 11th Grader Cesar Perez, who is in the band magnet. “It’s a blessing to be able to do what we do every day, and this new building will help us to improve our performances even more.”

The new building will have solar panels on the roof, as well as a new P.E. shelter, covered walkways connecting to existing buildings, and an outdoor dining area.

Four classrooms in Building 5 will be converted to two skills labs/Moot Courtrooms with conference and deliberation rooms, which the school’s law magnet students will use to practice their litigation skills.

Built in 2006 on Coral Way and S.W. 150th Avenue, the school currently has nine permanent buildings on approximately 16 acres. The facility has 1,842 student stations, which will increase to 1,922 upon completion of this project.

The project is estimated to be completed by August 2026.

These school bond projects resulted from voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond in 2012. Funds from the bond are being used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the District, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools.
