Miami-Dade County Public Schools Holds Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony at Coral Reef Elementary School

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony today at Coral Reef Elementary to celebrate the unveiling of a $5.3 million renovation project.

“We are so grateful for the beautiful, refreshed campus we now get to enjoy every day,” said Coral Reef Elementary School Principal Christina L. Guerra. “My administrative team and I strive to make this the happiest place for our staff to come to work and for our students to learn, and today we have taken a major step in that direction.”

In addition to Principal Guerra, M-DCPS Chief Facilities and Design Construction Officer Raul F. Perez, School Board member Luisa Santos, South Region Superintendent Rafael Villalobos, school staff, and students gathered at the school for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The Coral Reef Elementary School cheerleaders also performed at the event.

The project, awarded to Veitia Padron, Inc., included new covered walkways, a new irrigation system, the installation of artificial turf on the playground, and roof replacements in Buildings 10 and 3.

Other upgrades included painting the exterior of some buildings, replacing windows, exterior doors, new ceilings, and new flooring in some classrooms.

“The paint makes it feel fancier and more welcoming, and it made me feel like my school is pretty,” said fifth-grader Camila Leon. “And now we have more windows so we can see everything better, so I really like that.”

These school bond projects resulted from voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond (GOB) in 2012. Funds from the bond are being used to modernize and construct school
buildings throughout the District, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools.

“We want to give these students the best learning environment so that their teachers can take the best technology we can offer and give our students the world,” said Chief Facilities Design and Construction Officer Raul Perez. “This project included major renovations to theclassrooms, restrooms, and lighting. It’s wonderful to see this transformation.”
