M-DCPS Unveils Innovation Space at Highland Oaks Middle School

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) unveiled a redesigned, technology-rich, Innovation Space at Highland Oaks Middle School’s media center this morning. The new space includes an “Jump ‘n Learn” Active Floor, a Makerspace area with robotics for hands on learning and new furniture in an open area where students can engage in creative group activities.

"This innovation center is a tool so that our faculty, our staff and our community members can engage academically, enrich the learning of our students and ensure that we elevate the innovation here at Highland Oaks," said Magda Pereira, Administrative Director for School Choice and Parental Options.

The Active Floor “Jump ‘n Learn” is designed for students to play virtual soccer, race cars and many other games, but they can also take interactive quizzes that align with the math and science curriculum. The Makerspace area includes robotics, as well as arts and crafts, and other hands-on technology. There are also several board games.

"This space will have a huge impact because students can come here for their study hall period and when they get their work done, they get to relax and play all the cool games that they have here," said Tavaris McMillian, an eighth grader at the school. "

The media center redesign also included adding nine flip and nest tables that fold up so that the space can accommodate a variety of uses. There are also six Makerspace tables that can be used for Legos, robotics, as well as arts and crafts.

"It takes learning to a new level with new resources, new technology and a bigger area," said Sophia Arriata, an eighth grader at Highland Oaks. "It's also cozier with comfortable seating. It’s much easier to study when you're comfy."

Over the next two years, a total of 18 M-DCPS middle school media centers will be redesigned to meet the unique social, emotional, and academic needs of students and teachers. The project was funded by a $2 million partnership between M-DCPS, the College Football Playoff Foundation, and the 2026 College Football Playoff National Championship Game Host Committee.
