M-DCPS Hosts Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for D.A. Dorsey Tech College Computer Lab

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) held a ribbon-cutting at D.A. Dorsey Technical College to unveil their new Computer Systems and Information Technology Lab (CSIT). The lab is equipped with computers that will allow students to gain real-world experience in the information technology field.

“What we’re doing is something that will benefit not only the students in this school but the entire community,” said Schools Superintendent Dr. Jose L. Dotres. “This is a lab that will provide relevant and up-to-date experiences in the classroom for our students who will be prepared for tomorrow, not for the future, and that is very significant.”

In attendance at the ribbon-cutting were School Board Chair Mari Tere Rojas, School Board member Dr. Dorothy Bendross-Mindingall, Assistant Superintendent for the Office of Postsecondary Career and Technical Education René Mantilla, D.A. Dorsey Technical College Director Dr. Jacoby Watkins, industry and community partners, school staff, teachers, and students.

Funded by the Florida Workforce Development Capitalization Incentive Grant (CAP), this CSIT Lab expands students’ career and technical education opportunities in computer systems and information technology. The lab focuses on workforce development, equipping students with the essential skills required to transition directly into the industry upon graduation. Investments like this underscore why M-DCPS remains your best choice for students seeking cutting-edge learning experiences and strong career pathways.

“This is very exciting. We were able to bring state-of-the-art technology to our new computer lab,” said Dorsey Director Dr. Jacoby Watkins. “This will make it easier to recruit new students to our CSIT Program and can be used by our college students and our high school students in career dual enrollment programs.”

Watkins added that now the college will be open at night to serve students.

“Before, we had about seven computers, and now we have more than 25,” said Dorsey student Edvard M.Telasco. “This will help us so much with our studies. We have MacBooks, a better Internet connection, and plenty of space to work.”
