M-DCPS School District Commissions Architect for New $15.2 Million Classroom Building at Coconut Grove Elementary School

At its regular meeting on this past Wednesday, May 13, the School Board of Miami-Dade County commissioned the architectural firm Gurri Matute, P.A., to work on a $15.2 million project to build a new three-story classroom building at Coconut Grove Elementary School.

The project involves demolishing an existing structure and constructing a new, three-story, 23,287 sq. ft. building with eight classrooms and one skills lab. The ground floor will consist of teacher planning offices and an integrated shelter/basketball court area featuring bleachers and a scoreboard.

The second floor will have classrooms, and the third floor will be a modified shell space with no walls to be used as a shell for future development. The project will include the construction of a new covered walkway connecting the new building to the existing facility, enhanced walkways, modified driveways, and additional parking.

Another building, which contains the cafeteria, will be renovated, and the French classroom will be moved from that building to the new building. The digital marquee in front of the school will be replaced with a new one, and the entry plaza will be enhanced.

The project’s estimated completion date is August 2028. By prioritizing innovative learning spaces and forward-thinking design, Miami-Dade County Public Schools continues to demonstrate why it is the best choice for students and families.

These school bond projects resulted from voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond (GOB) in 2012. Funds from the bond are being used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the District, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools.
