Miami-Dade School Board Approves Budget for 2026-2027

The Miami-Dade County School Board has approved a $7.4 billion budget for the 2026–27 fiscal year, reinforcing its commitment to student success, safety, and fiscal responsibility. More than 96 percent of the budget is allocated to teaching and direct services to students, custodial, security, and other school-level services.

“A budget is ultimately a reflection of our core values, and this plan proves that our highest priority will always be our children and the dedicated educators who care for them every single day,” said Superintendent of Schools Rafael A. Villalobos. “By focusing our resources directly on frontline instruction, specialized student services, school safety, and competitive compensation for our workforce, we are not only safeguarding our proud legacy as a seven-year A-rated district—we are positioning M-DCPS as the blueprint for the entire nation.”

This year’s budget reflects strategic investments in student services and continued support for Art, Music, and Foreign Language programs, which remain unmatched across the state. The District has also established a substantial reserve for full-time equivalent (FTE) students, anticipating a decline in enrollment due to declining birth rates, shifting migration, and the high cost of living in Miami.

The millage rate for 2026–27 is set at 6.623, a slight decrease from last year’s 6.633, continuing a trend of fiscal efficiency. Notably, the overall school millage rate continues to be among the lowest in more than 40 years.

The voter-approved referendum funds will again be used to support teacher salaries (88%) and enhance school safety (12%), ensuring that salaries exceed the national average and that every school has an officer on-site, as required by state law.

Along with maintaining affordable, high-quality healthcare benefits for staff, the 2026–27 budget increases funding to repair school facilities and improve campus security.
