M-DCPS Updates Attendance Boundary Committee (ABC) Community Engagement Process and Identifies Targeted and Advised Schools

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is moving forward with its Attendance Boundary Committee (ABC) community engagement process as part of ongoing school planning efforts that have guided attendance boundary and student assignment discussions in Miami-Dade County for more than 45 years. While the ABC process is established, recent School Board actions and policy updates have refined the timeline and communication workflow to provide families with earlier notice, greater transparency, and expanded opportunities to participate before final recommendations are presented to the School Board.

Guided by Board Policy 5120 (Student School Assignment and Attendance Boundary Committee) and Policy 2215.01 (K-8 Centers), the ABC process helps ensure student assignment decisions remain aligned with both the best interests of students and the responsible stewardship of District resources. The comprehensive review process considers multiple factors, including educational program viability, facility capacity and utilization, transportation considerations, feeder patterns, demographic and enrollment trends, anticipated community growth, and long-term facility planning needs.

This process is not simply about facilities. It is focused on ensuring students maintain access to robust academic programs, electives, arts, music, athletics, specialized support services, and enriching educational opportunities that support the whole child. By engaging families and communities early, M-DCPS seeks to strengthen educational opportunities, support informed decision-making, and ensure every recommendation remains centered on student success.

Consistent with M-DCPS' commitment to excellence, choice, innovation, and safety, the District continuously evaluates how schools, programs, and facilities can best support student success. As a District that has earned seven consecutive "A" ratings from the State of Florida, M-DCPS remains focused on sustaining high-quality educational experiences, expanding choice options, supporting innovative learning opportunities, and maintaining safe learning environments. M-DCPS remains committed to being the best choice for families.

Understanding the School Classifications

To reflect the revised policy framework, M-DCPS utilizes updated classifications for schools under evaluation:

·       Targeted: Six (6) schools have been identified as Targeted, meaning that some form of action or boundary recommendation is anticipated for the 2026–2027 school year.

·       Advised: Twenty-eight (28) schools have been identified as Advised, meaning they will be closely monitored and further evaluated before any definitive action is considered.

Neither designation represents a final decision regarding a school's future.

How the Process Works

The ABC process includes three key steps:

1.    Review of school, community, and District data.

2.    Collection of community feedback through stakeholder engagement and public meetings.

3.    Presentation of recommendations to the School Board for consideration and final approval before implementation.

Community Engagement and the Role of Principals

Regional Superintendents will lead each meeting and provide presentations regarding the schools being discussed. Principals from the designated schools, as well as principals from associated or receiving schools, will attend the meetings to answer questions and support their school communities. Schools will distribute parent communications about these meetings, and principals will continue providing updates and opportunities for community participation throughout the process.

Consistent with communications sent to affected school communities, schools designated as Targeted will continue operating in their current configuration while the review process occurs. Likewise, schools designated as Advised will continue normal operations while the District evaluates information and gathers community input before any recommendations are developed.

Understanding the Community Meeting Tables

All community meetings begin at 6:00 p.m. and are open to parents, employees, students, community stakeholders, and interested residents.

In the meeting schedules below:

·       Schools shown in bold are designated Targeted or Advised schools and serve as the primary focus of the meeting.

·       Schools listed without bold formatting are associated or receiving schools that may be affected by proposed attendance boundary recommendations and whose students, families, and employees are also encouraged to participate in the discussion.

·       Regional Superintendents will present information and answer questions regarding the process. Principals from both designated schools and associated schools will be present to support their school communities and help facilitate discussion.
